VISIT THE RAILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK Today, visit the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, home to the Historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse—an intact and still-functioning steam locomotive repair and maintenance facility, portions of which date back to 1897. This one-of-a-kind attraction combines industrial heritage and railroad history with the lore of Hollywood’s film industry.

You will also have the opportunity to view movie props and other artifacts used in the production of feature films, TV shows, and commercials. One of the most popular of these is the mock-up of an 1880s railroad caboose used in filming for "Back to the Future III." Other items of interest include fake "rocks," background scenery, and numerous small-town station signs.

VISIT THE MARSHALL GOLD DISCOVERY STATE HISTORICAL PARK Visit the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historical Park located at the site of the gold discovery that started the 1849 California Gold. The park features a museum, many original and restored buildings, and costumed volunteers. You will learn how to pan for gold, and you can buy a gold pan there as well. Bekeart’s Gun Shop, located in the Park, offers similar activities and old-fashioned trade goods.

TRAVEL THE REDWOOD HIGHWAY Today you will take a scenic drive along the Redwood Highway passing redwood groves and a rugged wave-carved shoreline of beaches, cliffs, and sea stacks.

CHANDELIER TREE Next, you visit the Chandelier Tree, also know as the drive-thru tree. It is a giant redwood located north of San Francisco on US 101. The massive tree had the ignoble fate of having a tunnel carved through its base more than 60 years ago. You will have the opportunity to walk through the tree.

OVERNIGHT AT THE BENBOW HISTORIC INN Enjoy an overnight stay at a small town in the heart of California Redwood Country near the Avenue of the Giants nestled on the banks of the Eel River. AVENUE OF THE GIANTS REDWOOD TOUR Today, drive the Avenue of the Giants with a local guide. The Avenue of the giants are the largest remaining stand of old growth redwoods in the world. You will also enjoy lunch in the park while touring.

DINNER ON THE SKUNK TRAIN This private train, a two hour round trip, will take you from the Willits valley floor to the highest point on our rail line. During this trip you will pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon – an amazing ecological wonderland, and an excellent opportunity to discover the mighty giants that made Mendocino County famous.
